Welcome to Madison Capital Group
Ryan Hanks started Madison Capital Group in 2009 with the purpose of creating an opportunistic real estate venture that would seek opportunistic returns in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast region. He subsequently founded Go Store It in 2013—Madison’s wholly-owned self-storage operating company and acquisition and development platform—and is responsible for overseeing its investment and operating strategy.
Mr. Hanks has 20 years of real estate experience acquiring and developing apartment communities and storage facilities and has been involved in more than $5 billion in commercial real estate transactions.
Mr. Hanks was previously with Apartment Realty Advisors, the nation’s second largest apartment brokerage firm specializing in the disposition of multifamily communities on behalf of private and institutional investors. Prior to Apartment Realty Advisors, Mr. Hanks served as Vice President of Development and Acquisitions for a public company that specialized in the ownership, management, and development of multifamily communities across the Country, and was responsible for sourcing investment and development opportunities in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.
Mr. Hanks is a member of the Charlotte Apartment Association, Urban Land Institute, National Multi-Housing Council, and Self-Storage Association. Mr. Hanks attended Liberty University to study Business Administration.
President/Chief Operating Officer
Joe Teague has 20 years of experience in commercial real estate and related tax planning and business analysis. Joe has expertise in complicated finance structures as well as like-kind exchanges. As an attorney and business consultant, he has managed cumulative business transactions for companies in excess of $1 billion. Since leaving public accounting in 1998, Joe has worked at several premier law firms in the Charlotte area, working with real estate developers, high net worth family offices and private equity firms.
He is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association and the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants. Joe is a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne University, where he played varsity baseball, and a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Law. He has been a CPA for 25 years and a licensed attorney for 20 years. When not at work, Joe enjoys coaching Little League baseball and softball and spending time with his four children.
Chief Accounting Officer
Gina Craig is responsible for all aspects of accounting within Madison Capital Group and its affiliates. Most recently she spent 10 years at TIAA and Nuveen holding several leadership positions within finance and accounting, including real estate investment accounting and reporting across various asset classes and ownership structures, SEC financial reporting for a complex of mutual funds, and compensation accounting including partnering with HR in the design of new variable compensation programs. In addition to her time with TIAA/Nuveen, she has nearly 10 years of combined previous real estate and public accounting experience. Roles include Controller positions at Greystar and Wood Partners, and an auditor and internal control specialist at RSM. She holds a B.A. in Economics from Davidson College, where she also played volleyball and helped lead the team to an NCAA tournament appearance, the first of any Davidson women’s sports program. She also holds an M.S. in Accountancy, Summa Cum Laude, from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and is a North Carolina licensed CPA.
Sumit Anand has over 10 years of public accounting experience. Prior to joining Madison Capital Group and Go Store It, he was a Senior Tax Manager with a large regional CPA firm and member of the Real Estate & Pass-Through Tax Groups. Sumit worked with retail, residential and industrial real estate development clients to provide tax planning and strategies related to tax deferred real estate exchanges, inbound investment in U.S. real estate, fund structure and related tax planning to minimize the tax impact of various capital events. Sumit began his career with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) helping small business and self-employed taxpayers comply with federal tax law.
Sumit graduated from the University of Memphis with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Belmont University with a Master of Science degree in Accountancy. He is a member of the Tennessee Association of Certified Public Accountants as well as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Head of Construction Accounting
Samantha Sterling oversees all the construction accounting functions for Madison Capital Group and its affiliates. She works closely with the CEO and COO on the strategy and direction of Madison’s development activity. She has more than 20 years of accounting experience with a focus on the commercial real estate and construction sector. Prior to Madison she served as a controller and corporate accountant for a private equity company focused on multifamily and was responsible for a portfolio of 40 assets valued at $2 Billion. She also managed relationships with the firm’s joint venture partners.
Samantha received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an International Business concentration from the State University of New York at Buffalo, Amherst, NY.
Managing Director, Investor Relations
Marlene Arteta heads up the Investor Relations and Communications at Madison Capital Group and Go Store It. Marlene has 25+ years of experience in financial services, including C-suite roles with both broker-dealers and sponsors. Most recently she was Chief Content Officer for boutique broker-dealer Emerson Equity LLC. She also held marketing roles at firms such as the Chicago Board Options Exchange, Stein Roe Mutual Funds and with several alternative investment firms. She was also the first full-time employee of the Tenant-In-Common Association, currently known as ADISA, helping develop and promote the current industry best practices.
She received her Master’s degree in Financial Services Marketing from DePaul University and her Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She also earned her FINRA Series 22 and 63 licenses. She is a member of the University of Illinois at Chicago Athletics Advisory Council, whose mission is to provide perspective, counsel and advocacy for the Athletic Department’s strategic direction.
Head of Operations for Madison Communities
Christine Russo has 23 years of real estate experience in the multifamily industry specializing in lease-ups, renovations, and repositions including mixed-use in multiple markets, including Charlotte, Raleigh, Asheville, Greenville, Atlanta, and Austin. Prior to joining Madison Capital Group, Christine served as Regional Director with Bell Partners, Inc. overseeing the Charlotte, Asheville, and Greenville markets. She also led the focus on its third-party business development initiative and worked closely with the Investment Services Group sourcing new deals. Christine is an active member of the Greater Charlotte Apartment Association, CAM certified, CAP certified, and holds her NC Real Estate License.
Outside of work, you will find Christine on a lacrosse field coaching middle and high school teams in the Charlotte area as well as traveling to lacrosse tournaments with her two daughters.
President of Construction
David Anderson is responsible for construction activities in the Florida and Tennessee markets, leading the construction efforts on several projects, working with the development, preconstruction, and construction project teams. Prior to joining Madison Capital Group, David worked in the estimating and project management of more than 6,500 multifamily residential units located throughout Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia for Northwood Ravin, Greystar and JMC Communities, with total construction budgets of more than $1.7 billion. He has been active in the multifamily construction industry since 1992, with expertise in the construction of all types of structures.
David earned an MBA, with a focus on Project Management and Real Estate Finance, from the University of South Florida and a Bachelor of Science degree in Building Construction Management from the University of Florida.
Executive Managing Director
Raymond Smith is in charge of Madison’s development activity in the Charlotte, Raleigh, and Nashville markets. Prior to joining Madison, Ray was a Vice President of Development at Bainbridge covering the Carolinas, a Partner at Middleburg covering North Carolina and a Director and Vice President for Wood Partners in the New York City, Boston, Charlotte, and Charleston markets. He oversaw affordable housing across the United States and was responsible for development and financing for new projects. Ray has been actively involved in 22 multifamily communities with total capitalization in excess of $850 million.
Mr. Smith also served as Vice President in charge of financing affordable housing developments at Bank of America, handling commercial real estate loan originations. In total, Ray closed approximately $1 billion of real estate and derivative financing for income-producing properties.
Mr. Smith is a graduate of Bryant University with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a focus in Finance.
Executive Managing Director
Hobie Orton oversees Madison’s development activity in the South Carolina and Savannah markets. Skilled in all phases of the development process, Hobie has practiced in master planning, rezoning, residential lot development, hospitality development, apartment development and mixed-use urban villages. Hobie previously served as Director of Development for Biltmore Farms, LLC, the development arm of the Cecil Family, located in Asheville. There he oversaw the development of multifamily projects, hotels, single and family subdivisions, as well as the mixed-use project known as Biltmore Park.
Hobie received his Bachelor of Science degree in International Business from Western Carolina University and his Master’s degree in Real Estate Development from Auburn University.
Managing Director – Development
Rebecca Levell is responsible for the due diligence and asset management for our multifamily and retail investment activity. Prior to joining Madison, Rebecca was part of the investment and asset management team at Aston Properties, a Charlotte based retail investment, development, and management company. Prior to Aston, Rebecca was an analyst and investment sales associate with Berkeley Capital Advisors, one of the largest retail investment sales firms in the Southeast.
Rebecca received her Bachelor of Science degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Rachael Anderson is the Regional Property Manager for Madison Communities in Charleston. As a Charleston native, she brings extensive local market knowledge. Rachael started her career as a leasing professional during her college studies, and grew in the ranks, gaining understanding of what is needed to be successful in each position held at the site level. She joined Greystar in 2013 as Senior Community Manager and was entrusted as an esteemed mentor among her colleagues. Her communities were awarded several industry awards under her leadership and successfully outperformed the market. She went on the serve as a Multi-Site Manager with Greystar and became the lease up expert in the Charleston market. With a competitive and fun spirit, Rachael produces high performing communities. She believes in the importance of creating a true experience for the residents: Residents who love where they live and become connected to the community will stay and pay a premium for the experience.
Rachael received her Master’s degree from The Citadel in Clinical Counseling. She earned academic membership to the International Honor Society, National Honor Society and served as President of The College of Charleston’s National Honor Society in Psychology. Rachael is licensed in the State of South Carolina as a Property Manager In Charge.
Executive Managing Director
Todd is in charge of Madison’s development activity through Florida. Todd has over 15 years of experience in the development of luxury market rate multifamily communities that include garden, mid-rise, and mixed-use high-rise product types. He has been involved in the development of nearly 4,500 multifamily units throughout major and secondary markets in Florida with a combined value in excess of $750 million. Prior to forming McCrea & Company Real Estate LLC, Mr. Bleakley directed the development and acquisition efforts for other national and regional multifamily firms throughout Florida and the Southeast. Todd’s experience encompasses acquisitions, development, brokerage, property management, consulting, and leasing across market rate, student, and senior products.
Todd is a native Floridian and received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Florida State University. He also has completed graduate coursework at the Crummer Graduate School at Rollins College towards his MBA. Todd is a Certified Commercial Investment Member Designee, and a licensed Florida Real Estate Broker. Todd resides in Maitland, FL with his wife and two children, where he also serves on the City’s Board of Zoning Adjustment.
VP of Acquisitions
Neil is responsible for sourcing opportunities in our target markets. Before joining MCG Neil was with CBRE where he was in charge of all storage investments sales in the Southeast region. Through this experience Neil got to know several owners and operators of storage assets throughout the U.S. Before that Neil was a VP with Spectrum Properties responsible for the development and leasing of office projects in the Nashville market. Neil received his BS in Business from Sewannee.
